August 2022 First Monday
Dear alumni and friends –
Incredibly, the summer is almost over, and we’re preparing to welcome the class of 2025 to our campuses in Moscow and Boise. I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of the last year and what’s in store for 2022-2023.
Of course, a highlight of last year was the move to our new building at 501 West Front Street after outgrowing our beloved home on the Capitol Mall. Thank you to Jeff, ’75 and Kristine, ‘75 Stoddard, for their incredible generosity in providing this beautiful and fully equipped space downtown for our Boise community to thrive.

In April, we welcomed the American Bar Association for our decennial site visit. Our faculty and staff came together over the course of the year to evaluate our program, highlight our strengths, and identify areas for growth. We received particular praise for the relationships our faculty have with our students, for our commitment to providing legal services, and for the progress we’ve made in developing a strong scholarly community.
In the midst of these two major projects, we hired five new faculty we can’t wait to introduce to you. They will strengthen our programs in Business and Entrepreneurship, Academic Success, and Legal Writing.
We launched several major initiatives that you’ll hear more about over the coming year. The Vandal Bar Success Program works to tie our curriculum with bar preparation and provide students with additional feedback and community support through the study process. Our new Housing Clinic, launched in partnership with Jesse Tree and with the support of the Idaho Law Foundation, is helping families facing eviction in the challenging Boise housing market. The Idaho Heritage Project is placing law students in small towns and rural communities to help address the access to justice crisis to our state. We also made new investments in placing 11 of our students in paid public service internships with the support of the John Paul Stevens Foundation and other generous donors.
Yes, we’ve been busy, and there is still more to come! This month, we’ll welcome the largest and most diverse class in our law school’s history. Shortly after they arrive, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar will be joining us for the Bellwood lectures in Moscow and Boise. Please watch your email for an invitation to join us!

We’ve also launched three new faculty searches. We’re looking for a faculty member to run the new Housing Clinic on a permanent basis in Boise. And in Moscow, we’re looking for a fabulous person to launch a clinic that serves tribal communities and another to teach Agricultural Law!
Your support for us makes all of this possible. Thank you again for trusting me with the leadership of this wonderful institution.
Yours,
Johanna Kalb
Dean and Professor of Law
